Adolescent girls are capable of raising the standard of living in the developing world. Girls are the most likely agents of change, but they are often invisible to their societies and to our media. When everyone- girls, parents, teachers, executives, artists, hairdressers, forest rangers, rock stars, presidents, investors, advertisers, skateboarders, truckers, cowboys, organizations, chefs, teenagers- knows about the Girl Effect, then real change can happen.

The text that originated The Miniature Earth was first published on May 29, 1990 with the title "State of the Village Report", written by Donella Meadows. Nowadays Sustainability Institute, through Donella's Foundation, carries on her ideas and projects. The text used here has been modified. The statistics have been updated based on specialized publications and mainly reports on the world's population provided by The UN, PRB and others.

Doctors of the World is a humanitarian organisation working in over 70 countries. Doctors of the World help vulnerable people across the world, from young mothers and their babies in the slums of India to children on the streets of Cairo and victims of natural disasters, like the recent earthquake in Haiti or the flood in Pakistan. Here in the UK they run Project:London where they help some of the community’s most vulnerable, including victims of torture and people fleeing violence, pregnant mothers unable to access antenatal care, and babies in need of basic immunisations.

Anti-Slavery International, founded in 1839, is committed to eliminating all forms of slavery throughout the world. Slavery, servitude and forced labour are violations of individual freedoms, which deny millions of people their basic dignity and fundamental human rights. Anti-Slavery International works to end these abuses by campaigning for slavery’s eradication, exposing current cases, supporting the initiatives of local organisations to release people and pressing for more effective implementation of international laws against slavery. Women and Health Alliance (WAHA) International is a medical non-profit based in France, working to improve women’s healthcare in disadvantaged communities around the world. More than 340,000 women die every year during pregnancy or childbirth. Africa and Asia account for 95% of the world's maternal deaths. For every woman who dies in childbirth, twenty more suffer from injuries which can cripple them for life if left untreated. WAHA International works together with universities, medical practitioners, community groups and policy makers mainly in Africa and Asia.  Together WAHA develop and implement innovative and effective strategies to ensure that women have access to skilled help during delivery and to post-partum care.  www.waha-international.org

We represent the South African branch of Save the Elephants (STE), a non-profit organisation founded in Kenya by Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton in the 1990s to help fight the illegal ivory trade. We are dedicated to securing a future for elephants and to the on-going growth of man's understanding of elephant ecology. The Transboundary Elephant Research Programme focuses on studying elephant movements to the North, East and West of the Kruger National Park within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. Save the Elephants - South Africa (STE-SA) is sustained by public support, enthusiasm and donations. www.savetheelephants.org

Book Bus Foundation aims to improve literacy rates in Africa and South America by providing children with books and the inspiration to read them. The Book Bus currently provides a mobile library service for children from disadvantaged communities and families in Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador. Book Buses tour schools, hospitals and orphanages to promote reading and storytelling to children who would otherwise have little or no access to books. There's no doubt that stories can make a difference to children's lives and with story tellers onboard, the Book Bus can help maintain the link between local society and its own stories as well as providing inspiration with new stories from afar. www.thebookbus.org
